Biography

Dr. Trevor Hart is the Director of the HIV Prevention Lab, the HOPE Centre for Gender and Sexual Minority People, and the Sexual and Gender Minority Counselling Training Hub (SCTH). He is an international leader in research on the behavioural and psychosocial determinants of risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood-borne infections (STBBIs) and the mental health of gay, bisexual, queer and other men who have sex with men (GBMQ).

Dr. Hart currently leads the Engage 2.0/Men鈥檚 Experiences of Substances and Sexual Health (MESH) study, a multi-site (Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Winnipeg), multiphase, sequential mixed-methods biopsychosocial study. This study builds upon the success of his previous CIHR-funded Engage Cohort Study, which collected quantitative data from 2449 sexual minority men to further investigate the distinct classes of crystal methamphetamine use among this population through new data collection. This study focuses on the motivational and other psychosocial mechanisms by which crystal methamphetamine is associated with STBBIs. He also leads two clinical trials: (1) the Sexual Confidence Study, which tests the efficacy of GBQM-affirmative cognitive behavioural therapy for social anxiety disorder integrated with substance use management, funded by CIHR; and (2) the RiSE Study, a pilot study testing the efficacy of GBQM-affirmative cognitive processing therapy for PTSD integrated with substance use management, funded by OHTN.

Dr. Hart received his doctorate in clinical psychology from Temple University. After graduate school, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine, through which he received training at the Division of HIV/AIDS Prevention of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He then worked for four years as an Assistant Professor at York University before joining the Department of Psychology at 91影视 (91影视; formerly Ryerson) in 2007.
