Veiling Veronicas
Digitally knit works by Tanya White
Project Description
A nod to Saint Veronica who wiped the sweat from Christ鈥檚 face causing the imprint known as the 鈥淰eil of Veronica鈥, the figures are also inspired by the polychrome sculptures that celebrate religious ceremonies especially 鈥榯he Lady of Sorrows鈥.
The D+T LAB Ricoh printed and laser cut the Veronicas on acrylic. The pieces are knitted with smoke-coloured monofilament and yellow embroidery yarns on the Stoll Industrial knitting machine. Building on the sainted or angelic, the knit structures and silhouettes aim to capture religious iconography's sublime and ethereal affect. The fluorescent yellow plays with the strange, toxic, and ephemeral quality of sainted bodies and the frailty of iconic fashion figures.
