91影视 the Self Assessment tool

D2L has recently announced their Intent to implement End of Life (EOL) of the Self Assessment tool, as of January 2027. The Fall 2026 term is the last term during which you鈥檒l be able to create this type of assessment.

There will be a tool to migrate existing Self Assessments to the Quizzes tool, but bear in mind that it will only be available from late January 2027 to late May 2027.

In the meantime, we strongly recommend using either the Surveys tool, or the Quizzes tool, effective immediately, to create this type of 鈥減ractice assessment鈥. You will use one of those tools in the future, once the Self Assessment tool is removed.

This page will remain available for a short time, to support instructors who choose to use this tool during the Fall 2026 term, but it will eventually be removed, after the tool is no longer available.

Find the Self Assessment tool in the top menu bar, under Assessment.

If it's not there, please review our tutorial to learn how to enable course tools.

The Self Assessment tool will no longer be available, as of January 2027, as D2L is removing it from the Brightspace platform. Here is some advice for which tool to use instead:

There are times when you require different types of feedback or reporting for the student or instructor. It's important to select the best tool for the task, so that these needs are met. Depending on your goals for the exercise, you may find that either the Quizzes or Surveys tools are appropriate.

Since the Self Assessment tool will reach its end-of-life in the early part of the Winter 2027 term, and D2L will only provide a migration tool from late January to late May 2027, please use this process to move any existing Self Assessments into the Quizzes tool, now.聽

You will not be able to access or copy your existing Self Assessments after May 2027.

Confirm how many Self Assessments you have

You need to import the questions from your Self Assessments into the Question Library, so that they are available to be used in a quiz, which you will create in a later step. You will need to repeat this once for each Self Assessment.

In your course shell, go to Assessment > Self Assessments.

Make a note of how many Self Assessments you have, and which ones you want to migrate. You may have some that you will never use, so consider not copying those. You may wish to jot down or copy and paste the names of those you wish to migrate into a temporary document, so they are handy.

If any of the Self Assessments have instructions or other information in a header and/or footer, you may wish to also copy that text into a temporary document, for use in a later step, when you recreate the assessment in the Quizzes tool.

Import questions from each Self Assessment to the Question Library

You need to import the questions from your Self Assessments into the Question Library, so that they are available to be used in a quiz. You will need to do this once for each Self Assessment.

To do this, in your course shell, go to Assessment > Quizzes, then click on Question Library.

If you wish to import questions into a particular section within the Question Library, first click on that section name (or create a new section, then click on it). Otherwise, questions will be copied into the main level of the Question Library.

Click on Import > Browse Existing Questions to copy questions from your existing Self Assessment into the location you were in when you clicked (the default is the main folder, if you haven鈥檛 clicked on a section).

In the panel that appears on the right side of the page, click on the filters in the upper-right of the page, and select the Self Assessment that you wish to copy questions from.

If needed, you can also use the other filters in the upper-right, to finetune your search for questions.

Select the checkboxes for the questions you wish to import to the Question Library. If you want to import all questions, select the 鈥# items selected鈥 checkbox, which will select all of the questions in the list.

Note that any questions which already exist in the Question Library will be tagged with a green 鈥淎lready Imported鈥 note, and are not selectable.

Click on the Import button, at the bottom of the page.

You will now see the questions listed in the question library, in the section that you were in when you started the import. If you have multiple pages of sections and/or questions, navigate to the last page, to see the newly added questions.

You can now make changes to these questions, such as editing or moving them, just as you would any other questions in the question library.

A few things to check:

  • Self Assessment questions did not have a points value, so you may need to add that.
  • Self Assessment questions did not have a correct answer selected, so you will need to select one, or your quiz will not work as expected.
  • This is a great time to copyedit the language in all questions and answers, BEFORE they are added to a quiz.
  • Also, questions in Quizzes and the Question Library have a lot more settings that you may find useful, so please explore those.

It鈥檚 very highly recommended that you edit, make changes, and confirm all questions and answers before you move on to the next steps. It鈥檚 much easier to fix them now.

Create a new Quiz, to replace the old Self Assessment

In your course shell, go to Assessment > Quizzes.

You can follow our detailed Create a quiz instructions, to walk through the steps of creating a new quiz.

Next, use our instructions to add the questions that you just moved to the Question Library, using Add existing > Browse Question Library.

If you want to create any new questions to add to an assessment, we highly recommend making them in the Question Library and adding them to the quiz in the same way, rather than creating a question inside the new Quiz. When a question is created in the Question Library, it is easier to reuse the questions in multiple ways in the future.

Note: If you make changes to questions AFTER you import them into a quiz, please be aware that these questions are a copy of the questions in the Question Library. If you make changes in one location, make sure to also make the same updates in the other location.

Quiz settings to consider for Self Assessments

While creating the quiz, consider how you want the self assessment to work, as it may be slightly different than a typical quiz.

If the self assessment is NOT graded

For example, if the self assessment will not count toward the student鈥檚 final grade in the class, you do not need a grade item, and do not need to connect the quiz to the gradebook. Please review our instructions for which Grade out of settings to use.

Hide question points values, if they are irrelevant

If the purpose of the self assessment is only to gauge knowledge and/or you want to encourage equal effort across all questions, without the weighting of points influencing students, you can select the Hide question point values setting, found in the 鈥淭iming & Display鈥 section. Learn more about when this might be appropriate.

Consider what students should see after completion

For a typical quiz, most instructors do not show questions or correct/incorrect answers after the student submits their attempt, because this increases the risk of test content being shared inappropriately, particularly if you tend to reuse questions each term.

However, in the case of a self assessment, you might want students to see which answers were correct/incorrect, question feedback, etc, if it doesn鈥檛 jeopardize the integrity of content in assessments that count toward the final grade in the course.

If you want to use this feature, please review our instructions to control what students see after the quiz is complete.

Make sure that you test this functionality with your demo student account, to ensure that it works as expected.

Additional suggestions

To reduce student anxiety in low-stakes assessments and practice tests, make sure that the instructions for the quiz (and in your course outline) clearly spell out the purpose of the assessment, whether or not it counts toward the final grade, if students can view their results, and if you鈥檒l be looking at student results.

If you don鈥檛 want students to take a self-assessment/quiz until after they have completed some other task in D2L Brightspace, you can use release conditions to control when students have access to the assessment. These work in combination with date restrictions, so make sure that date and release conditions do not conflict.

You can use the results of these types of self assessments to inform your approach in class, perhaps shifting more focus to topics that students are struggling with. When most or all students have completed the assessment, you can go to Assessment > Quizzes > Statistics to see a variety of data, such as which question responses were commonly selected.

Make the new quiz visible and save your work.

Once you鈥檝e reviewed all settings in the quiz, including the self-assessment-specific suggestions mentioned above, make sure that you have set a start/end/due date, if needed. Also check that you have made the quiz visible, and saved your work.

Hide the Self Assessments tool

Once you have made new quizzes to replace all of the assessments that were in the Self Assessments tool, and they are ready to be used, make sure to hide the Self Assessments tool in your course, so that students will only use the new quizzes. You can do this in your course shell:

  • Go to Course Admin > Tools.
  • Click the toggle beside Self Assessments, to turn the tool off.
  • Click on the title of the course shell at the top of the page, to reload the shell. You will now notice that Self Assessments no longer appears under Assessment in the top navigation.

Since the Self Assessment tool will reach its end-of-life in the early part of the Winter 2027 term, please use the Quizzes tool instead, using our instructions to create a quiz, and the advice just above on this page.
