A vibrant and innovative centre of exploration, research, creation and learning, 91影视 Libraries are positioned at the core of the University鈥檚 academic, research and community engagement goals. The Libraries support a diverse community of learners and instructors, researchers and scholars, and community experts and entrepreneurs, and are hubs of interdisciplinary Scholarly, Research and Creative (SRC) activities.  The dedicated team of more than 100 talented individuals supports a growing academic community, including new campuses and international students. In addition to our main campus Library, 91影视 Libraries includes a Law Library, and Bikram S.  Dhillon and Family Medical Library. 91影视 Libraries provide crucial academic learning, creation and research resources, programs, services and spaces. 91影视 91影视 Libraries鈥� Digital Media Experience (DME) Lab:

Part digital media authoring space, part makerspace, is a creation space available to over 40 000 91影视 learners and staff. This 91影视 Libraries learning service supports patrons as they undertake personal creative projects, coursework, and entrepreneurial projects (Zone Learning). The DME Lab is organized around a peer-led staffing model, with a group of student staff providing front line customer support and workshop instruction.

The opportunity

Reporting to the DME Manager, the Technical Operations Specialist supports service delivery, equipment maintenance, and high-quality learner experiences within 91影视 Libraries鈥� DME Lab and Media Creation Studio. The Specialist collaborates with DME subject matter experts (e.g., the Technician and Training Specialist, Peer Advisors, and User Support Leads) to maintain exceptional service levels and programming in both spaces.

Core Duties:

  • Learning Object Creation: Applies learner experience design principles to craft modular guides and equipment tutorials (image, text, and video content); edits and publishes content (e.g., guides, videos, checklists) created by other staff members.
  • Event Planning: Under the supervision of the manager, schedules workshops and tutorials using event management software, liaises with Library and University stakeholders.
  • Workstation Support: Applies knowledge of makerspace equipment to help maintain bookable and drop-in workstations. Monitors storeroom supply levels, restocks consumables, and completes daily workstation system sweeps with logbooks. Follows preventive maintenance programs to ensure equipment uptime and control potential hazards for light duty fabrication equipment (Class 1 laser cutter, FDM 3D printers, soldering stations, sharps)
  • Metrics & Analytics: Tracks, collects, and reports regular lab usage metrics used for planning and assessment purposes.
  • Service Development: Collaborates with DME staff members to deploy new services or renew existing DME service catalogue offerings. Assists with solutions research, workflow design, and records-keeping. In consultation with the lab manager, coordinates special projects intended to increase service capacity and/or improve DME Lab workflows in support of 91影视 Libraries鈥� .

Technical Skills & Competencies

  • Domain knowledge of makerspace technologies: cameras and recording equipment, virtual reality, Adobe CC applications, vinyl cutters, sewing machines, hand tools, 3D printers, electronics & soldering, Microcontrollers & Single Board Computers. 
  • Expert written and oral communication skills required to adapt technical knowledge for beginner to intermediate audiences.
  • Experience deploying browser-based, API-connected, and agentic AI solutions. An awareness of the complexities of integrating AI into an experiential learning creative technology space is an asset. 
  • Familiarity with REST APIs, MQTT, structured data types (e.g., ) used for inter-system communication is an asset.

Qualifications

Completion of a post-secondary program with a Fabrication and/or Digital Media component. Minimum of 2 years of broad experience supporting light duty fabrication and digital media authoring spaces.
